Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and use embellishing techniques for textile products either during or at the end of production. Products may be apparel or non-wearable items. Embellishments may be added by hand or machine.

This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with pre-determined specifications and established procedures.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

1. Prepare to add embellishments

1.1 Identify job requirements from work specifications

1.2 Identify and comply with work health and safety requirements

1.3 Identify factors to be considered when adding embellishments based on nature of the product and process required

1.4 Identify criteria for selection of threads and attachments

1.5 Set up equipment and materials based on job requirements

2. Add embellishments

2.1 Lay out work pieces in order that supports an efficient work process

2.2 Safely use techniques and equipment to achieve required specifications

3. Complete work

3.1 Confirm that work complies with quality standards and production specifications

3.2 Identify any faults, report and record, and take necessary action to repair or discard

3.3 Process completed articles for next operation in accordance with specifications

3.4 Complete work documentation in accordance with workplace procedures

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • embellish textile products to specifications and workplace quality standards using at least three of the following methods on at least two different products in any combination:
  • appliqué
  • beading
  • embroidery stitches
  • fabric insertion
  • patchwork
  • pintucking
  • quilting
  • shirring
  • smocking.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • key aspects of textile product embellishment:
  • types of equipment used for manual and machine embellishments and associated safety considerations
  • characteristics of fibres, threads, fabrics and other materials used
  • visual and performance criteria for selection of threads
  • factors for consideration when adding embellishments, including fabric, positioning and purpose of article
  • quality indicators for completed embellishments
  • ways of minimising waste
  • types of information included in production documentation.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • work specifications
  • products for embellishing
  • tools, equipment and materials for embellishing
  • workplace procedures.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
